SUBLIME
"Life is too short, so love the one you got, 'cause you might get run over or you might get shot."
Sublime basically represents the soundtrack of my adolescent years and that of some of my best friends. I love Sublime! Their music is an incredible mix of Reggae, Ska, and other island sounds mixed with punk and alternative rock elements. It's AWESOME! It's a shame though, first of all that not very many people have heard of Sublime, and second that their career was limited to only three albums due to the untimely death of lead singer and guitarist, Bradley Nowell, from a heroin overdose.
Sublime exemplifies the care-free teenage life, with an emphasis on jamming and chilling with your friends. Sublime also did some awesome covers of classic reggae groups like Toots and the Maytals and the Melodians. In my opinion, the unsung hero of this band was their bassist, Eric Wilson. He wasn't a beast on the mike, but the bass lines that this dude dropped were nothing short of sick. Of course, Bud's drums and Bradley's vocals and guitar are first-class too.
Sublime's sound is completely unique and original. No other band has the same reggae fusion sound and does it to complete perfection. That is partially what makes them so awesome. They can easily be credited with re-introducing reggae, ska, and dub styles of music to a new generation. They also did a lot in the early 90s to help bring punk rock into the mainstream. And who can forget Brad's dog Lou the dalmation, the official bad mascot? That's legit.
There will never be another Sublime. RIP Bradley.
